Community UCC in the News

Date: March 20, 2018

St. Paul Park, MN — Community United Church of Christ is pleased to announce the arrival of its new pastor, Janice Steele, to our congregation and community. She officially began her pastoral duties on March 1, and preached her first sermon on Sunday, March 3.

Janice received her Master of Divinity degree from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California in 2007, and was ordained in 2009. Most recently, Janice served as Interim Minister at Foothills Congregational Church in Los Altos, California.

Janice’s ministry began with a love for music and the performing arts, and she has been lifting her voice in song since was a young girl singing in the church choir. She has performed on Broadway with her gifted gospel- and R&B-singing siblings, The Steele Family Singers, and aims to bring her love of music to every Sunday service. “Music is ministry, and I tend to blend singing with my preaching,” Janice says.

With a charismatic style of preaching—which includes clapping, “amen,” and poignant sermons delivered from the aisle as opposed to behind the pulpit—Janice’s Sunday services are invigorating and lively.

And she is looking forward to what lies ahead. “I am excited to serve a congregation that welcomes change and challenge; a congregation that understands that Jesus and Justice go hand in hand; a congregation that discipleship and the great commission of love and acceptance,” Janice says. “I am excited about the opportunity to expand our mission and outreach programs, and our children and youth ministries.”

Janice Steele lives with her spouse, Patrisha, a composer who will frequently play piano during worship.
